The firing is started by maintaining a small fire in the mousehole. The dogs have a passionate interest in sticks and no interest at all in firing.

Stoking one of the front side stoking ports. The middle side stoking ports have an air intake underneath and are stoked much more frequently than the front and back ports.

The dampers as they are when the kiln is going at its normal rate. The exit cross sectional area is about 80 sq ins.




The fire box is stoked every ten minutes for about 3 days. Ash must be raked regularly from the mouse hole so that the ember bed is kept alive.
