This chimney serves both kilns

Most of the wood used comes from eucalypts.

Each kiln takes about 100 hours to reach the top temperature of 1150C. The bricks are unpacked after cooling for 5 or 6 days. The fireboxes are stoked as needed rather than strictly in turn, and stoking can be handled by just one person. Wood collected green is preferred to old wood as the latter tends to harbour sandy dirt brought in by ants. The dirt tends to glaze up the apertures in the fireboxes.
