The chimney construction proper starts a couple of courses above this level as can be seen from the position of the exit flues (see photo below).

The bracing AB is to support the floor arch and looks odd because of refractory material spilt on it.

Apertures 1 and 2 allow access to the optional “back mouseholes” through the chimney base.




Here the lower courses of the chimney have been laid and the problem of creating an entrance for the exit gases from the chamber has been solved.

If an alternative damper system is employed this part of the construction would be a little different.
